haydarpaşa_transformation project

Haydarpaşa Terminal is a terminus main station of the Turkish State Railways (TCDD) in the Haydarpaşa quarter of the Kadıköy district, at the Anatolian part of Istanbul, Turkey. International, domestic and regional trains running to east- and south-bound destinations depart from this major terminal which was built as the terminus of the Istanbul-Konya-Baghdad and Istanbul-Damascus-Medina railways during the final years of the Ottoman Empire.
The structure was built on wooden piles hammered into the seabed and is therefore surrounded by water on three sides, a unique feature for a railway station. The railway station was built between 1906 and 1908 by the Anatolia-Baghdad Corporation, and was a gift to Sultan Abdülhamid II from his ally Kaiser Wilhelm II.

With the changing conditions of the metropolitan area İstanbul, nowadays İstanbul municipiality is planning to change the function of the terminal also with the new transportational ways, some part of the railway will be unuseless. So with my master class project, we thought about that transformation. How will be the transformation and what will be this railways area? How should we transform it?

We united the project documents with a book and i was the editor of this book.
Here are my pages from the book.

title of my project : "corridor where the city flows inside"
keywords: urban corridor, architecture in borders, landscape urbanism, public areas&activities

İstanbul's transportational map is changing and new mediums of transportation are entering the city's life.As i mentioned above, with these transportational and areal changes, historic Haydarpaşa train terminal will be transferred to other functions by the municipiality and some parts of the railroad will be useless.
At my project i am focusing on this thin long area (old railway axis) which is passing inside the historic housing areas and finishes with the nodal point of new transportational mediums...
rails...city...borders...history...memory...time...flow...
with these keywords and also with the "transfer " concept, i am trying to design an "activity corridor" where the city and it's cultural, artistical and landscape functions flow inside and also it can be a pedestrian walkway where the functions are sprinkled inside.

"why do we leave this river of rails alone and abandoned..we could fill it with the energy of the city and give it back to the city again... "

Red axis above is my project area. On the left up, next to the sea(beginning of the railway) Haydarpaşa Terminal stands...At the end of the axis, there is the nodal point of new transportational mediums.
At graphic 2 below, greeen coloured parts shows the green areas next to my project site. Here we can understand that, this environment needs a green place for its housing parts and for the healthier way of life.

Diagram today is an architecture on it's own.It has own language and voice. They are the abstract, symbolical frames of the data which are compressed and visualised connected with the time and place. The more data it has, more things it tells.
Schemas above tell us some analysis and conditions about the site.I made diagrams of the axis and did crosswise crossections of the long corridor to see and axamine the elevations along the site.
It shows the railway conditions and relation with the environment and also with the pedestrians.
Other diagrams below the page (3 of them) summerazi 3 main conditions ..being under the elevation of housing area, being at the top of the railway axis and lastly being under the passage.

After crosswise sections, i tried to scan all the area with the crossections and summerize the conditions of the axis and its environments. Above we can see 2 main crossectional series. On the right analysis phase and on the left serie, we can see new crossectional suggestions to the work area.

4 diagrams above are functional approach works. At first one i am trying to organise the main functions of the area. The second shows the points which can turn to structural forms...I mean at first diagram i search and organise the functions to establish to the area, at the second one i search for the places where can i build, construct or where these functions can turn to a building. At the third one, instead of spreading the buildings , i thought about designing the whole axis as a entire area...Fourt one shows us the pedestrian and vehicle flow at the place.

This diagram tells about the relation of old railway axis and the buildings which surround it. I mean , i tried to think about the base areas and height of the buildings which surround my corridor.Red lines symbolize the changes at the width of the railway axis. Also there are black lines that shows us the pedestrian circulation & crossings at the area.

Here we can see an experiment that i did with the ink. The ink touches the water and it expands. I want to touch to some points of my area and i want this touches effect it s environments also.
Like mixing 2 and more colour of inks, i want to mix different functions at the site and i want them effect their environments.

I have 2 different charasteristical area that i determined. Firs one is the axis that goes through the housing areas with the elevational difference.(image above)
Second main area is the railway that goes at upper levels at some parts and finishes at the transportational nodal point.(image below)

At my transportational nodal point, there are 2 conditions.Being under the railway gate and being at the higher level. So the images above:
first one is a decisional diagramm of pedestrian circulation under the gate. ı tried to create facing , intersection points. these squares and points are near to the elevators and ramps that carry us to the upper level. And also to prevent the place from the criminal texture, i tried to design the pedestrian walkways with the perspectines that people can see each other ...
Third image is the upper level plan with many landcape activities.

Above we can see the upper level activities...

After these point railway elevation start to continue under the housing level. So here i tried structures that make the area visible and that serve to multifunctional activities...

This is the first characteristic area that i mentioned before( railway that passes from the lower level, between the housing area)

At the end of the axis, my cultural building stands...
These are the design process images (above)
With the building i tried to emphasize the old railway axis. Like its thin and lond structure, building stands 8meters to 50 meters dimentions.
Even the tran will not pass from here again, building will stand here at the axis of the railway to emphasize the memory of the city...
